While the word does imply something done (with skill) by hand, "manually", it also is listed in the dictionary as "influencing with the intent to deceive" - which is NOT how most people like to be "handled". I'm of the opinion that it's often best to let people know what you intend to do (to and for them) up front - as a hypnotist does. The techniques and triggers work just as well - if not better - when you have conscious consent (to access their emotions).
