Why You Need A Facebook-Fanpage And How To Create One

by Mark on 21/10/09 at 7:26 am

The way most people perceive Social Media, boils down to
a major misconception which possibly has to do with a
lack of online marketing experience. Or, possibly with
the fact that the “social” in social media is reminiscent
of the word “socializing”. However, with this approach,
crawling over each other until someone asks you what it
actually is that you’re selling OR (much worse) shoving your
stuff in their face when you don’t even know them, you would
need the life-expectancy of a Galapagos-Turtle to even sell a
tooth-pick. There is ONE thing you need to understand,
and that is…..that you need LEADS!!

NOT YOUR ROLE-MODEL, JUST A GOOD FRIEND:

If you are a serious online marketer you NEED a facebook-fanpage. As a matter of fact, you need one if  you are in the brick and mortar business as well. There are many reasons for that. First of all, your regular fanpage is limited to 5000 friends. With your fan page you are allowed unlimited friends. But the coolest thing: You can MARKET to these people using something called Facebook Events.

The second reason, is that it’s actually against the rules and regulations of facebook to be promoting your business from your regular facebook-account. That many people still do this and get away with it most of the time, doesn’t change this fact. If someone reports them, they could get suspended by FB.

So you don’t have to be “funny” about it. It doesn’t mean you are a celebrity like Madonna or that you are playing yourself up to be one.  “Fanpage” is just a term Facebook chose to name what is in reality a business-page.

This is what we mean by opt-in box, by the way. A place where people can leave behind their name and email-address so you can put them on your “list”. It may sound funny, but no opt-in box, no business. It’s as simple as that. If you can stick with me just for today, you will learn THAT as well.

This tutorial will not only show you how to set one up, it will also show you something that….in all honesty….took me hours to figure out.  Nobody teaches this stuff. You will love it. The tutorial will also show you how to turn your facebook-fanpage into a “website” with an optin-box and even a welcome-video to greet your new fans. Grab your favorite beverage because you will need to focus on this one. The following code you can copy right now and paste it into a word-document or notepad. You will need it while watching the tutorial to tinker around with. I have bolded the parts that you will need to replace with your own code and show you EXACTLY how to do this. Only copy what’s between the “——” ———————————————————-

Ok. Let me know if this makes sense. Now, I said in the video that you need 25 fans before facebook lets you chose your unique url, which is sometimes also referred to as “vanity url“. This is where you get it once you have those 25 fans.

Hi Mark, How amazing that I find you following me on twitter this am (followed u back) AND that you are sharing the very info I was looking for yesterday. How exciting.

I am a writer, am signing a book contract today actually on my first book (about my life in the Australian rainforest when I was younger), so all the info you share will be VERY useful to me. I appreciate it.

    Thanks!

Hi Mark, Good start to the Video got lost a little bit in the 3rd quarter of the video….but then at the end of it i relise that you’ve taken us a step further and put in a Video welcome page when they go to your fan page! All that coding was a bit hard to follow, i understand every step you talked about and what you were getting at, but might be confusing to some people…..I would suggest adding to the Video description that “This is how you create a fan page on FB and create / direct your fans to a welcome video instantly….something along those lines…

Thanks again for the great tips!

      “Unrelated to video”

Does your Blog have the ability for users to Edit their comments? Say i mispelled something or i quickly submitted the comment…then re-read and wanted to change / delete it?

      thanks!

      Taylor,

thank you for the kind words. Yes, it was a challenge to record this, it’s a bit complex. I should have told people a bit clearer what to expect, maybe. I have now tried to make up for it by changing the text on top of the video a little. Thank you very much for your input. But good stuff, isn’t it? Cheers!

        Mark,
Much better wording in the top…ie a WARNING message of sorts…”grab a drink and listen carefully!” good wording!

I would suggest looking into opening up the ability people to be able to edit / delete comments they leave. Sometimes we go to fast and mispell something and dont catch it. Or we post it, re read it and hate it….

Making things more user friendly is always a good idea!

Great info, i will be watching this again this weekend and working on my intro Video!

Hey Mark I just wanted to let you know that the fan page video is kind of confusing. I have been working on mine for a while and I still don’t have it up right yet.

    I will keep trying

Hey Chad, thanks for your reply. Do me a favor, rephrase your question so I know precisely what you are struggeling with, possibly even use http://www.jingproject.com to record it and show me. Cheers, Mark

    Hi Mark

Thanks for the great info. I have been following your video instructions and using the code you have supplied.

Is this still current? I’m not able to get the image or the video to show.

    I would appreciate your assistance.
    Thanks

      Hi Simon,

thank you for your comment. I am assuming it MUST be current, since my own video still plays. Check out that page on http://www.facebook.com/mtetzner
Just take the code “as is” and see if that works for you. Of course you then have to make the changes in order not to have my video playing on your page,
but at least you’d be a step closer to success? Let me know, Mark (use the code under the tutorial to try out).

I’m still going strong Mark… Took in a lot today. Actually watch all of your Facebook Training videos!!

…. So now I understand why I must jump through the hoops to get to my Fan page…. looking forward to having 25 plus fans!!

BTW: This was excellent training!! Seriously. It is absolutely amazing how much you pack into a 10 minute or less training session. You “speak” at a steady/slow pace and synchronize what you say with great visual aids that allows one to easily follow along.

Boy!! Have I learned a lot today — better yet, I’ve already applied the knowledge. That’s way cool!!!!

    Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for these tutorials. I am having a problem though. When I go tothe fbml page there is only ‘ add to my page favourites’ option. The ap then doesn’t show up in ‘edit my page’.

Also I don’t have those icons like you do at the bottom of the page. I had to go to ‘edit page’, scroll down to bottom where it has a tab for fbml app, which I clicked on and it took me to the page I mention above.

    HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
