Branding Secrets Day 3 – I don’t give a hoot about your “valuable content”

by Mark on 03/09/09 at 10:19 pm

There is a gospel being preached in the social media arena, which says: provide valuable content. I beg to differ, I think content is not that important or at least over-rated. Or is it? Did you ever read Zen and the art of motorcycle-maintenance (an old classic)? It’s a treatise on “values” and the reader soon finds, values seem to be a “mushy substance”. So what about “content”?

No matter what you think, I want you to liberate yourself from the pressure of producing “valuable content” and just go with the flow. Listen to yourself. Your opinion, the more individual the better, is what the market-place really wants to see.

The sovereignty you have over your work will inspire far more
people than the actual content ever will. How your own
sovereignty inspires other people to find their own sovereignty,
their own sense of freedom and possibility, will give the work
far more power than the work’s objective merits ever will.

Your idea doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be yours alone.
The more the idea is yours alone, the more freedom you have to
do something really amazing.

The more amazing, the more people will click with your idea. The
more people click with your idea, the more this little thing of
yours will snowball into a big thing.”

Let me know if you are catching the gist of what I am really trying to say. After all, it was Jim Rohn who said: You don’t get paid for time. You get paid for the value that you bring to the market-place.

So…which is it? Content or Mojo? Be honest, if you care to leave a comment.

    Hi Mark

I really like your post here. I think that there are a lot of people just doing what everyone else is doing. Just be yourself and those that are attracted to you will be attracted to you because of who you are, not what you are trying to be!

    Your blog is looking great.

    To your success,
    Melissa

Thank you so much for your comment, Melissa. I wish more people would realize that they are already different, and show their uniqueness to the world. Unfortunately, there is still so much spam out there. I wish people would use social media to show their real face!

Your right on the money Mark, pun intended. But in all seriousness,
most go about it all together wrong. Thanks for the enlightening information. Always wise to differentiate from what the masses do, imho. Keep spreading the good word.

    Happy trails,

    Ron Graham : )

as a writer, i know i’m not creating anything new..just rearranging the words on the page..still, they look new to most people..

there you go. you gotta understand many think they have to come up with something so original so they kind of freeze up and get writers block, sort of.

    Hey Mark,

Another good video! And you are so right – you cannot reinvent the wheel however you CAN do it YOUR way. Once you find what that is (could be another video topic for you) you’re on your way!

    Cheers

    Mark, Mark, Mark!

This is exactly what I have been thinking all along.

There are certain personality types who will disagree, of course, but you and I — we are the ones with friends now aren’t we? The bottom lines remains “Who are YOU?”

Keep being yourself as you are uniquely qualified!

This is brilliant Mark. There is nothing new under the sun, content wise-what is new is the individual and there take on content. It is about the person not the content. Thank you :)

    Mark,

I agree, content is king, but without adding our own personality and (as you so eloquently put it) Mojo is the important part of the puzzle.

Thanks for reminding us that it’s not all about the info!

Hey Mark, first things first. Go to Twitter and follow me!! All jokes aside, I’ve been tweeting you and having a dialogue with you on Twitter for about a week, I’ve started your course which I find fantastic so do me a favor and just . . . follow me back, thanks.

NOW . . . on to more pressing matters. I like your style Mark. You don’t rehash a lot of what I’m hearing “out there.” Unfortunately I missed your webinar the other night but I’m sure it was awesome. I think I’m going to learn a lot from you, and I hope I’m looking to have as much success learning from you as you have had, learning from your mentors.

Your idea about content rings true to me and resonates with what I already believe. Thanks for helping me clarify that part of my philosophy on content. I look forward to the rest of the series. Until we speak again, be well – Marcus

Hi Mark, super video. You’re right, content is content is content, but delivered a piece of ourselves, we can make it new and fresh and exciting and relateable for people like ourselves. Then our phone rings.
